REIRS: Radiation Exposure Information and Reporting System

Radiation Exposure Information and Reporting System (REIRS) for Radiation Workers

The NRC's REIRS system provides the latest available information on radiation exposure to the workforce at certain NRC licensed facilities. It also contains information concerning the recording and reporting requirements of NRC licensees.

REIRS contains several data bases that record the radiation exposure information submitted under 10 CFR Part 20, including termination reports submitted under the "old" 10 CFR 20.408, annual dose distribution reports submitted under the "old" 10 CFR 20.407, and annual exposure reports (Form 5) submitted under the Revised 10 CFR 20.2206.  Only "occupationally" exposed workers are included in the REIRS databases. This does not include radiation exposure to the public.

NOTICE:

On December 4th, 2007, the NRC issued a Federal Register notice concerning changes to Parts 19, 20, and 50 that impact Occupational Dose Records, Labeling Containers, and the Total Effective Dose Equivalent. In relation to the NRC REIRS Project, the most significant changes are (in brief summary form):

  • licensees are no longer required to send reports to individuals who receive 100 mrem or less. However, licensees are still required to send these individuals a report upon request, and licensees are still required to include these dose records in the annual report to REIRS in accordance with 10 CFR 20.2206.
  • licensees are no longer required to "attempt to obtain" lifetime dose histories, unless the individual is expected to participate in a Planned Special Exposure (PSE).
  • The definition of TEDE has been changed to allow licensees to substitute effective dose equivalent (EDE) for deep-dose equivalent (DDE) for external exposures.

The initial effective date for these modifications was January 3rd, 2008. The NRC issued a second Federal Register notice on Dec 20th, 2007 that extended the effective date to February 15th, 2008. The NRC has confirmed that this is the correct implementation date of the modifications. Please contact us for any questions concerning these modiciations in relation to the REIRS Project.
